He left his family while in Indiana and fought in the Civil War. In late September or early October, 1862, he crawled three miles on his hands and knees to see if his baby had been born and to make sure that his family was all right. Herman Edwin and Herbert Edward had been born September 25. After seeing his family was safe, Stephen crawled back through enemy lines, part of the way on his stomach, to get back to his regiment before daylight.
He imigrated to Trumbull Co., Ohio June 1832; fought in American Civil War 1860-5

RICHARD RISLEY is believed to have descended from the Lancastershire, England, Risleys...In lineage he was a Norman. In religion he was a Puritan. Born in England, probably Oxon, County Lancastershire, prior to 1615, he emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Boston, sailing from Downs in the ship "Griffin" July 15th 1633, in company with Rev. Thomas Hooker, Rev. William Stone, Rev. John Cotton and the Hon. John Haynes. The ship "Griffin" brought from England many of Hooker's church in Braintree, numbering more than a hundred persons. The ship landed in Boston Harbor September 4th 1633. Hooker and his associate located in Newtown, (now Cambridge) Mass., where a church had been previously erected to accommodate the new comers. Hooker was ordained pastor of the new church and William Stone as teacher on October 25, 1633. The little colony thus planted was surrounded by troublesome conditions which seriously affected the entire population of Massachusetts Bay and Salem Colonies, it being a struggle between the church and civil magistrates and the people which resulted in the election of John Haynes as Governor, in 1634. Rev Hooker and his parishioners seemed not to have taken part in the struggle; his followers obtained permission of the General Court to remove to the Connecticut Valley in the winter of 1636.
On May 31st 1636, the entire company turned their backs on the Massachusetts Bay Colony, leaving behind nothing to be desired and betook themselves through a trackless wilderness on foot to the locality now occupied by the city of Hartford, reaching their destination in about a month. A treaty was consummated with the Indians for a tract of land, embracing the present city of Hartford and the adjoining towns of East Manchester and East and West Hartford.

I had not seen the pictures on the cemetery pages. Frankly, I went to Salt Lake City back in 2003 with the Arkansas Genealogy Society and I copied all of the cemetery pages out of a book on the cemeteries in that area. (St Mary’s, St Mark’s, St Joseph’s, St Anthony’s and Sacred Heart.) I hadn’t checked to see if they had put the images online yet! Thanks for making me look at this page again. I’ll have to see if they have put anything else online yet!
Vernon was raised in Newton, Harvey Co., KS which is just north of Wichita. I don’t remember my inlaws ever going down to the Sedgwick area to see family unless it was maybe to a funeral. His immediate grandparents all lived in Newton also.
I plan on going down there on one of our future trips home to walk the cemeteries and to get a feel for where he came from. I did graduate school in Newton, KS. That is where Vernon and I met. We have lived most of our married life in AR which is where I am from.
My Baumgardners were from the Wythe Co., VA area back in the 1700’s. I have a lot of information on that line back to that time. The German spelling probably had the “t” in the name but my branch changed the spelling after coming to America.
Baumgardner means “tree gardener”. Apparently some ancestor had a plant nursery or something!
Sundays are busy at our home. One of my daughters is here doing taxes for a friend and I really need to get off the computer until after church tonight! Hope this gives you something new to work on!
