Bigelow Thomas Sumner [Male] b. 12 AUG 1808 Jamaica, VT - d. 20 NOV 1878 Preemption, Mercer Co, IL

Thomas spent his early years in VT and when 16 years of age, moved with his parents to Middlebury which was then a suburb of Akron, OH. At the age of 18, he met and married Lydia Searls on 08 March 1827. As she was underage and he was unable to support her, her parents had the marriage annulled and she was taken back to New England. He early studied medicine, but took up the trade of jeweler and watch-maker. He invented the first oscillating engine, the endless drive and gear belt chain and the first self-turning well drill. Other inventions included the Little Giant sugar cane mill, a rotary pressed-brick machine, invented and improved a machine to manufacture cut nails and tacks from cold sheets of steel. This led to the end of the "trunnel", or wooden peg, in construction. He received $50.00 for developing the double-seaming tin machine, which could "bottom" anything from a tin cup to a large dishpan without the use of solder. This was used until the age of plastics. The treadle sewing machine used a principle first used by Thomas. Many other inventions, too numerous to mention, were his. He passed up several fortunes as a result - he felt that his few minutes' time was not worth a large sum of money and that if his inventions could lead to the betterment of mankind, they should be free for all to use. In October 1832, he married Mrs. Clarissa (Jacobs) Warner. She died 05 May 1848 Akron, Summit, OH. He moved to Lake Mills, WI in 1849 and by 1850 we find the 6 youngest children living with friends in various homes. He refused to let them be adopted. He continued the watch trade until 1872 when he moved to Preemption, Mercer, IL to live with his daughter, Eliza, where he died on 20 November 1878.

Bigelow Noah Jr. [Male] b. 27 JUN 1766 Westborough, Worcester Co, MA - d. ABT. 1844

born in Westborough, Worcester county, MA, 29 June 1766, as listed in town records. The family moved to Hampshire county, some years later, and due to the mother's death, his father remarried in 1778. According to his own statement in later years, Noah Jr was living in Pelham, MA in 1781, and ran away from home during haying season to enlist in the 4th Regiment, Massachusetts line, and served six months in 1781.
His next few years are blank, but by 1790 he was living in Woodford, Bennington county, VT, with himself, a wife, and two boys under age 16. In 1800, still at Woodford, his family had increased, with the children totaling one male between 1-l6, one male and 3 females under age 10.
Noah married, before 1790, but at unknown date and place, Cynthia Scott (see below). He is the same person who is listed as Silas Bigelow on page 469 of Howe's Bigelow Family of America; this has been proved beyond doubt by the NSDAR application of his great-granddaughter Mrs. Laura Cole. Howe's Bigelow genealogy states that Noah died circa 1800. However, he served as town hayward in 1803. The writer believes that it was Noah's wife who died, perhaps as late as 1805, and that the family was broken up by her death, with younger children raised by relatives. Noah jr disappears from Vermont records before 1810, and some years later (1819) appears in Chenango county, New York.
In Chenango county in 1819 Noah Bigelow jr applied for a Revolutionary War pension, but was rejected because his discharge papers were missing. In 1820 he was ennumerated at Oxford, Chenengo county on the census, but by 1830 had moved to Leicester, Livingston county. Here he re-applied for a pension in 1831, and was granted $58.31 per year. On the application, he gave his birthdate and place correctly, leaving no doubt that he was Noah Bigelow jr.
Noah remained in Leicester some years, being listed there again in 1840 as a pensioner. But in March 1844, presumably when his sons began migrating westward, Noah next appeared before a justice-of-the-peace in Barre, Orleans county, NY. He stated he had lived in Barre six days, and was the same Noah Bigelow who had been receiving a pension in Livingston county, and he authorized either Elijah Cobb or attorney Hiram Prentice to collect his pension for him. He signed in a semi-literate, shaky hand. He was 78 years of age. Henry L. Bigelow witnessed the document. There is no further record of payment, and we presume Noah's death soon after the date of Mar 1844.
Judging from census records, he had a fair-sized family. The Bigelow genealogy identifies three children who remained in
Vermont. Two sons migrated to the midwest. Daughters have proved impossible to trace.
1790 census: VT-Bennington-Woodford-Noah Bigelow: l-2-l-0-0.
Mass Sold & Sail of Rev War, Vol II:
Bigelow, Noah. Private, Capt Oliver Shattuck's co., Lieut. Col. Barnabas Sears's (Hampshire co.) regt.; enlisted Aug.12, 1781; service, 3 mos. 2 days; enlistment, 3 months.
