He went to Colwich, Kansas with his brother Louis, and worked as a carpenter there. He married Cecelia Anna Albers on 02/07/1921 at Aleppo, KS. She was born at Aleppo, KS on 04/151891 and died in Wichita, Kansas on 10/26/1945. They first farmed in Barber County, KS and then moved to a farm at Pleasanton, KS. When Charles died, Cecelia and daughter, Pauline, moved to Wichita, KS. They had 1 daughter.

At about 18 years of age, she moved to Wichita, KS, to be with her sister, Mary Josephine, who was in poor health most of her life. She also worked as a bookkeeper and when she retired she moved to Geneseo, IL, to live with her sister, Ida Clara. She never married and is buried in the Hooppole, IL Cemetery.
Listed in 1910 census in the household of James A. Lewis in Wichita City. She was listed as a sister-in-law to James A. Lewis. She was 23 years of age, and single. The census says that both of her parents were born in Germany.

An 1877 directory of Yorktown Township, Illinois, lists a Joseph Schmitt, farmer, democrat, catholic, born germany, with 135 acres, living in section 20, near Prophetstown. Is this the same Joseph Schmitt?
