He became important in social position. His wife came from an educated family and insisted that the children be well-edjucated. The children all went to college, and some also went to Germany for further studies, because it was considered to be an important part of their education. Americans were still neutral in the war, and did not know much about it at the time that Edward V. Sittler and Charles Sittler went to Germany. Then, they got stuck in Germany and could not leave.
