I'll try to answer some of your questions. Mom and Dad were married in Sidney 4-13-1940. They were secretly married early in the morning and went to work. Mom was teaching and couldn't let anyone know until school was out in June, because they didn't hire women who were married to teach. I'm not sure when Dad went to Sidney. I'm guessing he graduated from high school around 1931. He went to Sidney and worked for Ray Babcock taking farm equipment of rail cars and setting it up at Ray's International Harvester dealership. He also at one time drove new oil trucks from the factory (Detroit?) to Sidney for Babcock Oil Company, also owned by Ray Babcock. I heard there were some hard feelings when he left the farm to go to Nebraska. His older brother Norville was running the farm (Roy Darius had diabetes which eventually killed him. Norville wanted to marry Elaine and expected Dad could take over the farm when he graduated. While working for Babcock(I'm not sure when) Ray said he would loan Dad the money for tuition at Grand Island Business College if Dad could take care of the room and board. Dad worked for a funeral home for room, setting up chairs, answering the phone at night, etc. He said it was a nice quiet place to study. He washed dishes for three Greeks in a restaurant for his food. He said his Dad once sent him a dollar and told him to get some ham and eggs. They didn't let him eat much food or very good food. The boss, not knowing Dad had paid for his ham and eggs gave the cook hell. Said Christ, next thing I know, you'll probably be giving him pie.
After he graduated, he went back to Babcock's business in Sidney as bookkeeper. That led to Ray sending him to Keenesburg when he bought that bank. Babcock also owned banks in Leadville, Walsenburg and Center. Dad was on all the Boards, so picked Ray up once a month for the trip to all banks for board meetings. Dad started working in Keenesburg (supposedly a temporary deal) in late 1948, built and moved into a new house in Sidney in January 1949, and moved out of the brand new home in Sidney to Keenesburg on December 7, 1949. He drove back and forth for a year. Home on Wednesday nights and weekends. His first home in Sidney was on 1804 Newton St. and the new on at 1456 (?) Jackson St. Joan through Kevin were born while we lived in Sidney, and Mom went back in 1951 to have Mae. Margo and Bob were born at St. Joe's in Denver. Yes, they are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Brighton. I really don't know when Dad moved to Sidney or when his Dad died. The farm was outside Hartford S. Dak.
Grandma moved to Sioux Falls, 909 S. Walts after her husband died . Mom and Dad's mom didn't get along. Grandma was upset that Dad married a Catholic and converted. She wasn't particularly tied to any religion. Just anti-Catholic. I think Dad went straight from the farm to Sidney but really don't know for sure.
Hope this helps some.
