Left Nettersheim, Germany in 1888 with his twin brother Albert, and sisters Theresia and Barbara, and sailed for the United States.

Naturalization in Sedgwick Co, KS filed 11/01/1890.

Eventually acquired his own dairy and beef operation on the west side of Wichita, and several of his descendants still live in the area.

Older relatives recall that when Edward married Frances Jansen from St. Mark's Parish in 1893, they set up housekeeping on a rented farm two miles north of Goddard. Their wedding picture reveals that Frances' hair was as short as her husbands's. As a result of a serious illness, perhaps scarlet fever, during the previous year she had lost all of her hair and it was just growing back.

During the ten years they lived on the rented farm, Frances gave birth to a daughter, also named Frances, and sons Edward Jr., Carl, Raymond, and Albert.

In 1903, the family moved to a 153-acre farm purchased from Ferdinand and Margaret Hornecker for $7,500. The land extended from what is now 119th Street West to one half mile east and from 13th Street North to one-half mile north, currently the Echo Hills housing addition in West Wichita. The abstract still in posession of the Jaax family shows that the piece of land was originally homesteaded during the Ulysses S. Grant administration on July 15, 1870 by Archibald Johnson.

When Edward and Frances bought the farm, it boasted a two-story farmhouse, as well as a milkhouse, barn, corn crib, and windmill.

When Hilda married Edward Jr., in 1919, she says her mother and father in law had approximately 50 head of cattle and raised wheat, corn, oats, and alfalfa, as well as tending to an orchard and large garden. They also raised hogs and chickens.

Over the years they acquired various other properties in the west part of the county including acreage which was eventually purchased by the U.S. Government in 1937 to create Lake Afton.

After moving to the 13th Street farm, Edward and Frances had five more children: Martin, Bertha, Alfred, Corene, and Virgil.

Ralph Pauly, Frances (Jaax) Pauly's son, remembers that Edward Sr.'s summertime birthdays were occasions for fun and family get-togethers.

From: "The Jaax Odyssey" by Ada Tully...

March, 1886. Albert and Edward Jaax stood at the crowded rail of the coal-fired steamer, watching eagerly for a sight of the promised land. The boys were identical twins who would be 21 on August 22, 1886. They were good looking boys, about 5'8" tall, with snapping brown eyes and brown hair that was windblown from the spring gales that had whipped the water into waves. They were accompanied on the journey by their older sisters, Barbara, 25 and Theresia, 22.

Dear Jim,

First: Grandpa Valentine Bock was married twice. Ida Jansen Bock was My dad's (Paul Bock) mother. She died 13 days after dad was born. His grandparents Matthew and Helena Jansen took him into
their home and raised him as one of their family. When Paul was nineteen his father married Josephine Givens. Valentine and Josephine had three children, Margurite, Jane and John.
I do not know why Paul was listed twice in the census. Valentine was living in Wichita. I do not know if he lived with his dad or with his grandparents after he returned home from St. Benedict's in Atchison. Both Valentine and Josephine lived to be over 80 years old.

Yes, you are related on both sides of the family. Your great great grandfather was my mother's (Barbara Diefenbach) first cousin. Your great great grandmother was my father's aunt.

Second: I was born in Anaheim California. My parents lived in California from 1918 to 1926. They moved from Schulte, Kansas. They returned to farm in Kingman County Kansas in the Willowdale community. My brother Dick was in the Naval Air Corps during WWII and died in a plane crash. He is buried in Willowdale. My parents retired in Kingman but are buried in Willowdale.

My siblings have all died, Ida Evelyn died at the age of 5 weeks, the others Helen Idel, Paul Richard, Robert Valentine, John Joseph, and my foster-sister Margaret (mom's niece). I (Barbara Belle) am the last of the Paul and Barbara Bock family.

If there is any other information I could supply, Please feel free to ask.

God bless you.

Sister Cornelia Bock OP
